Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup
Walter Lechner: "The new start - difficult, but important!”
Walter Lechner and his team had to wait a long time, but now the racing season is finally starting for the successful team from Faistenau in Salzburg. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season 2020 will begin as part of the support programme of the Austrian Grand Prix - under strict conditions and restrictions that do not always make it easy for everyone involved. For example, the number of admitted employees is limited to four per car, there is a ban on contact with other teams and series, and the obligation to wear masks makes it difficult for the mechanics to work in the pits.
Not only because of the Covid-19 circumstances the season is a special year for Lechner and his team: It´s year number 1 after Michael Ammermüller. The Supercup champion of the last three years refrains from defending his title with a heavy heart due to scheduling conflicts with the ADAC GT Masters.
His place at BWT Lechner Racing is taken by the New Zealander Jaxon Evans, one of two Porsche Juniors in the Supercup. The 23-year-old already convinced his new team boss during his first appearances: "During testing on the Red Bull Ring he set the fastest time of the day twice and also worked very well with the team from the very beginning," Walter Lechner is pleased to report. Evans is also happy in his new surroundings: "Walter's team has set the absolute standards in the Supercup for many years. I can learn an incredible amount there. I just hope that I'm able to justify the trust placed in me. The goal must be to at least be able to compete for the title.”
His team-mate will be Dylan Pereira from Luxembourg, who has been part of the Lechner team already for four years, celebrated his first Supercup victories in 2019 and wants to attack fully this season: "I saw last year that I can compete at the top. Now I just have to see that I can implement this even more consistently," says the 23-year-old.
Two youngsters will compete for the Lechner Racing Middle East team this season: German Leon Köhler, who last year already made a name for himself time and again in the German Porsche Carrera Cup and who won the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East in a sovereign manner this winter, is regarded as one of the most promising talents within the various Porsche Cup Series. At the age of 20, he wants to "first of all just learn" in his first complete Supercup season. “And there is no better teacher than Walter and his team."
Next to him is Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer, normally only called JB in the paddock, who has been part of the Lechner squad for three years, mainly in the German Porsche Carrera Cup, but also sporadically in the Supercup. "My problem in the last few years has always been qualifying, I still have to improve there. If I manage to do that this year, I can make some significant progress,” says the 19-year-old.
A third car from Lechner Racing Middle East will be driven by different drivers during the season. For the two races at the Red Bull Ring, 22-year-old German Julian Hanses will be behind the wheel. He started his career in Formula racing and gained his first GT experience in the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East in winter.
