Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup
Victory for Julien Andlauer and BWT Lechner Racing at Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2019 at Barcelona
Julien Andlauer and BWT Lechner Racing had a great start into the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season 2019 at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, with the Frenchman claiming victory ahead of Ayhancan Güven from Turkey and his BWT Lechner Racing teammate Michael Ammermüller.
Andlauer, starting from pole position, had to defend himself against some moves of Güven in the opening lap, while Ammermüller as well came under pressure from behind, but both BWT Lechner Racing drivers manage to hold their positions. Towards the end of the race, the Porsche Junior was able to slightly pull away from his Turkish rival, who soon had Ammermüller completely filling his rearview mirrors, but there was no way for the reigning Supercup Champion to get by without risking a crash: “I was definitely faster in the end, but I decided not to put valuable points in danger just at the start of the season”, Ammermüller was adamant, while Andlauer celebrated his win: “I could not have had a better start into my Supercup season with Walter and his great team. There were some critical moments especially on the first lap, but I managed to keep it all cool and clean. In the end, it got a little bit easier, but I still had to stay fully focused to avoid any kind of even a little mistake.”
Tio Ellinas from Team MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing did not have the best start from P4 on the grid and lost two places, gaining one back passing Jaap van Lagen on lap 5 just before the Safety Car had to come out due to a midfield incident for two laps. With only one lap to go, he succeeded in reclaiming P4: “I think it was not too bad for my first Supercup race”, the 27-year-old from Cyprus stated, “but of course I will be aiming for the podium in the future.” His teammate, 21-year-old Dylan Pereira from Luxembourg had an off and a spectacular spin on lap 2, which dropped him to the back of the field, forcing him to make up a lot of lost ground afterwards. But even with some nice overtaking, P13 was the maximum to be reached in the end.
Team Lechner Racing Middle East´s Al Faisal Al Zubair from Oman had a good and clean race, finishing in P7, staying in touch with the leading drivers over the whole distance. His teammate Saul Hack from South Africa was also quite content after finishing his first Supercup race in P14: “I gained some places, stayed out of trouble and could see that I was immediately able to compete in the midfield, so I guess that´s a rather reasonable start.”
Team principal Walter Lechner was of course very happy with the result: “A victory, another podium finish, four cars in the Top Seven and our newcomers all doing a very good job – it could not have been a much better start into the season for us. Now with the season´s highlight in Monaco coming up in two weeks’ time, I hope we can repeat our strong performance there as well, knowing of course that at this street circuit you also always need a little bit of luck, especially in qualifying...”
