Three Titles for BWT Lechner Racing – Two Victories for Jaxon Evans in Barcelona
BWT Lechner Racing had a fantastic final weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup France in Barcelona: Jaxon Evans secured the drivers´ title with two race wins on Saturday and Sunday, the team championship also went to the Austrian squad and Nicolas Misslin managed to defend his title in the Pro-Am class with a perfect weekend.
Evans was incredibly happy after having won both races with impressive performances: On Sunday, he took the lead directly at the start from Ayhancan Güven, who started from pole – and defended the lead until the chequered flag after the race was restarted following more than 15 minutes behind the safety car, due to a first corner crash. “I knew I had to keep my act together, make no mistake and bring the title home. I am so glad it worked out”, the Porsche Junior from New Zealand was beaming all over his face. “After I had a really bad start into the weekend with all my gear stolen from my rental car, it now couldn´t have ended any better than winning the championship.”
On Saturday he was already able to celebrate his first victory in this series, after starting from P3 on the grid. “But I had a terrible getaway and there was also some chaos in the first corner, so I dropped back to P8. But from then on I had a really good race, could fight my way back through the field. Of course it helped a bit that quite a lot was happening in the front, people getting penalties or making mistakes...”
JB Simmenauer was the unlucky victim of a first corner incident in Sunday, being kicked out of the race immediately: “It was a bit of a chain reaction, and there was nothing I could do about it. Of course it is very disappointing, as I still had title chances. But congrats to Jaxon and the whole team for another great success.” On Saturday, the 19-year old Frenchman had finished third on track after a strong race, gaining quite a few positions after dropping back quite a bit in the first corner chaos, being promoted to P2 on Sunday morning after Adam Eteki finally received a penalty for causing a collision with Richard Wagner.
German Wagner was a winner of the start chaos in the race on Saturday, making it up from P7 to P3 immediately behind Latorre and Güven and finally being classified in P4. “I really had good speed today and was able to show that I can fight with the top guys better and better”, he was happy then. In the second race, things did not turn out so well, as this time he was involved in the first corner incident, dropped back a few places and finally received a 30-second-penalty for causing a collision while trying to fight his way back.
Nicolas Misslin finally had a perfect weekend: Twice he managed to do a triple in the Pro-Am category: Pole position, victory and fastest lap of the race. “It all went to plan, I also kept a set of fresh tyres for Sunday´s race, and as I was leading the category from the beginning, it was mainly the question to administrate this advantage. The calculation was quite simple: If I win the race, I will be champion again! This was my big goal – and it worked out! Realizing it after all the bad luck at the start of the season is a great achievement for the team and myself. Thank you to Walter and his guys who gave me the opportunity and always had confidence in me!”
Team principle Walter Lechner was of course ever so happy with the outcome: “It was a fantastic weekend for our team and it is a great feeling to win all the championships we competed for. Especially as we are newcomers in the French Porsche Carrera Cup, fighting against more experienced competition. It didn´s look that promising before we came to Barcelona – so it´s an even nicer surprise. Thank you to all our drivers, to my whole team for a great job done – it was such a great end to the European season!”
