Thomas Preining Wins Last Race – Dylan Pereira Rookie Champion
It was a very successful season final for Lechner Racing at Hockenheim: Thomas Preining, already crowned overall champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany 2018 yesterday, won his tenth race of the season out of 14, just ahead of his BWT Lechner Racing teammate Michael Ammermüller, making it another one-two for the pink cars, which clearly dominated the series this year. Dylan Pereira finished in P4, which was enough for him to win the rookie championship eight points ahead of his main rival Igor Walilko.
Preining had taken the lead from pole position immediately with Ammermüller and Lechner Racing driver Pereira being able to follow close, but the race had to be stopped with the red flag in lap 7 after a heavy crash between Jack Eidson and Henric Skoog. After a more than 15 minutes break to get the drivers safely out of their cars and to clear the track, the race was resumed behind the safety car and at the restart Preining kept his lead with Ammermüller behind. “I wanted this tenth win of the season quite badly, and I am ever so happy I got it”, the Austrian, who equalled the record of Sven Müller from 2016, was adamant. “It was a great year for me so far – now I just need a nice final weekend in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Mexico in one month´s time.”
Dylan Pereira seemed to be bound for the last spot on the podium, but when Dutchman Larry ten Voorde started to push very hard against him during the last laps, the 21-year-old from Luxembourg decides to play it safe: “Of course it would have been nice to finish the season with a podium, but my main goal today was to secure the rookie championship. And as he already pushed me off the road yesterday, I did not want to take the risk of something similar happening today”, he explained. “I knew I just had to keep the car on the road ahead of Waliko, who was a few places behind, so I focussed mainly on this goal. And I am really happy now that it worked out and I got this title after a season that was not always easy for me.”
His Lechner racing teammates Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer and guest starter Al Faisal Al Zubair ended up in P11 and P12 after being involved in a lot of midfield fighting over the whole race distance.
“It was a great season for us with a great final as well”, Team principal Walter Lechner was very happy. “Another one-two victory and Dylan Pereira securing the third title for us – that´s a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to him, especially as he did not have an easy year sometimes. In general, I think I can say with 12 wins and second place in the other two of the 14 races we were the dominating force in the German Porsche Carrera Cup 2018, which could only be achieved due to the impressive performance of everybody in our team. So I would like to express a special thank you to all my guys, but also to all our partners and sponsors who are behind this great success.”
