Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup

Thomas Preining Wins Close Race For BWT Lechner Racing at Red Bull Ring

“Three out of three” for Thomas Preining: Three races at the Red Bull Ring in 2018 – and three times the 19-year-old BWT Lechner Racing driver made it to the top of the podium. After winning the two races of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany three weeks ago, he now took an impressive and hard fought victory in the third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Preining did not have a very good start from pole position and also went wide in the first corner, so had to settle in P3 behind Julien Andlauer and Florian Lattore. On lap 7, he was able to pass Latorre for P2 and to put more and more pressure on Andlauer. With only one and a half laps to go, he managed to overtake the Frenchman in great style and take the chequered flag in first  place. “It was not easy today, but we had a great fight there at the top. To win my home race with such a performance against very, very strong competition is a dream come true”, the Austrian was beaming all over his face.

Dylan Pereira from MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing also delivered a great show, making it from P10 on the grid to P4 and claiming second place in the Championship now, just one point behind leader Michael Ammermüller, who did not have the luckiest weekend at Spielberg and after a lot of hard midfield fights had to settle in P7. “In qualifying I was maybe a bit too careful as far as track limits were concerned”, said Pereira, “but I knew from the German Porsche Carrera Cup, where I had to start from behind and made up a lot of ground, that overtaking is possible here. I already had a good start and in the end was even able to put pressure on the leading cars, but I also did not want to risk too much. The main goal was too finish ahead of my main championship rivals – and this I was able to do,” the 21-year old from Luxembourg was happy with his result.

His teammate Josh Webster, who had to start from P25 due to a technical problem in qualifying, finished in P15, with Al Faisal Al Zubair from Lechner Racing Middle East in P18. Bad luck struck for Roar Lindland, who was already hit in the first corner by his Lechner Racing Middle East  teammate Khalid Al Wahaibi and then lost the car just a bit later due to a slow puncture, having to retire in the gravel bed. Also guest driver Philip Hamprecht of MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing had his race ruined by a spin on lap 4, dropping back to the very end of the field and only being able to make it back to P28 until the end.

“Of course it´s a great day for us and especially for Thomas to win our home race after such a close fight”, Austrian team principal Walter Lechner was adamant. “I think today was the best example of what great sport the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup can deliver. We and all the spectators saw a fantastic race with a lot of action and close fighting all over the field, a great show but without anything turning out dirty or unfair. Looking at the ever so close championship standings only confirms what I told everybody from the very beginning: This season will be the closest and most interesting ever...”
