Third Victory for Thomas Preining in German Porsche Carrera Cup 2018
For Thomas Preining it was the third win in the German Porsche Carrera Cup 2018 in a row, for BWT Lechner Racing it was even the fifth triumph in the fifth race of the season of this series: The 20-year-old Austrian scored a dominant victory at the Nürburgring sprint circuit, taking the lead from pole position and then consistently extended his advantage to more than five seconds at the chequered flag. “It was a great race, I had a great car, thanks to my engineer Franzi, and now we will try to repeat it again tomorrow (11.30 a.m., Sport1) in the second race”, Preining was really happy after having closed the gap to his championship leading BWT Lechner Racing teammate Michael Ammermüller to 14 points.
Ammermüller had to start from P9 after receiving a five places grid penalty for overtaking under red flag in qualifying, but managed to make it up to P4, with a mixture of patience and controlled aggression while overtaking. “After the penalty I knew this race would be damage control again”, the Bavarian stated, “but I hope that tomorrow from P3 I will be able to give Thomas a nice fight...”
Dylan Pereira from Team Lechner Racing again proved his great overtaking abilities, climbing from P12 on the grid to P6 in the end, winning also the Rookie classification. His teammate Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer, starting from P13, also seemed to be on the roll and had already made it to P8, but during the final laps the 17-year-old Frenchman had to pay tribute to slightly overusing his tyres and dropped back to P12 again.
“Scoring another victory and having three cars under the Top Six of course is a nice birthday present”, team principal Walter Lechner was adamant. “Thanks a lot to my team and especially to my son Walter jr., who is leading the teams at the Nürburgring, for doing a great job even with me celebrating at home and not being present at the track for once.”
