Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup
Qualifying cancelled due to heavy rain – free practice counting for starting grid
It was pouring with rain during before qualifying for the ninth race of the Porsche Supercup 2017 at Monza. Nevertheless race control started the session, but after only four minutes it had to be red flagged due to Austrian guest driver Thomas Preining in his Lechner entered, but his car getting stuck in the gravel. After that it was decided to not resume qualifying due to the rather dangerous conditions.
Which means that the results of yesterday´s free practice will now count for the starting grid, with Australian Matt Cambpell in pole position ahead of the rather surprising Zaid Askanani. Row two will be shared by the main Championship contestants, Lechner drivers Michael Ammermüller and Dennis Olsen in P3 and P4, who are currently separated by only eight points. Dan Cammish, Dylan Pereira, and Thomas Preining will line up in P8, P9 and P10, Lechner Racing again ending up with five cars in the Top Ten.
"There was obviously too much standing water on the track to be able to guarantee a safe qualifying for everybody", team principal Walter Lechner was adamant. "So I think race control took the right decision before any further damage was done. We are expecting dry conditions for Sunday, so it can be an interesting race. Hopefully we will already be able to already celebrate the team title tomorrow!"
