Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Third title win for Lechner Racing in a row!
The old and new champion of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup comes from the Team Lechner Racing and is called René Rast. With a flawless performance in a highly dramatic final of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup René Rast not only clinched his fifth season victory, but also his overall third drivers title in the fastest one make cup of the world. Norbert Siedler, who clinched his third pole position this season and was in the lead of the race for almost the complete distance, finally had to settle eighth in front of his team mate Michael Ammermüller. Amateur racer Andreas Mayerl convinced with rank fourteen.
“I really can’t believe it! Ahead of the Sunday I never expected such a course of the race. Now I snatched the third title win in a row with the team Lechner Racing”, says a shining René Rast after the 14 dramatic laps in the Royal Park of Monza. “This was an unbelievable year for me and my team. I am really grateful to Lechner Racing for the hard work all over the year, which made this great success possible for me.” Started from fourth position into the race, the old and new Supercup champion set his biggest rival Kévin Estre right from the start under pressure, until the Frenchman made a mistake, dropped back behind the Lechner-Pilot and with that cleared the way to the Rast’s overall third title win in the Supercup. “When also Norbert Siedler and Sean Edwards were tangled in a collision, I was even able to crown the championship with the fifth race win this season.”
“What shall I say, of course I am really disappointed”, Norbert Siedler appears angry after the race on the 5.7 kilometres long high speed circuit. “After I snatched my third pole this year on Saturday, I was leading and in control of the race for almost the complete distance. However, in the penultimate lap of the race Sean Edwards hit the back of my car and pushed me off the track”, the Austrian describes the decisive incident, which cost Siedler not only the lead in the race but also the third rank in the final driver standings of the championship. Later on the Brit was punished with a disqualification by the race direction, “but that doesn’t really help me. Nevertheless, I am thankful to the VELTINS Lechner Racing for another great season in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.”
Michael Ammermüller was able to finish his first season in the fastest one make cup of the world with another top-10-result. “With a better grid position in the qualifying on Saturday a better result in the race would have been possible for me as well. However, in the hunt for a good spot in the starting grid I unfortunately missed to snatch a good slip stream from one of the other drivers”, the Bavarian commented on his ninth rank at the final round. “Altogether it was a difficult season for me, but with the help of the Lechner-Team I was able to make good progress. Thanks for that great job.” Finishing 14th, amateur-pilot Andreas Mayerl was pleased about a conciliable season final. “Today it would have been enough even for 11th rank, but in the last stage of the race I pushed the car and the tyres too hard and so I could be passed by two opponents again. However, altogether it was a great season which made a lot of fun”, so the Austrian.
“I am simply overjoyed”, says Walter Lechner Junior after the Weekend in Monza. “To celebrate such a marvellous success with a young team already in my first season as a team boss is simply unbelievable. The partners, the drivers, the engineers as well as the mechanics, we all made a perfect job. It will take some day’s to completely realize what a great achievement we have managed in the course of this season. Right from the start of the championship until today we have worked really hard and that’s the reason why we were rewarded with the driver’s title”, the boss praises his team and race engineer Chris Crawford agrees: “Wining is everything, championships are better! The team got what it deserved.”
