Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup
One-two for BWT Lechner Racing at Walter Lechner´s 70th Birthday
It could not have been a nicer birthday present for Austrian team principal Walter Lechner, who turned 70 on Sunday at the Hungaroring: BWT Lechner Racing drivers Michael Ammermüller and Julien Andlauer scored a one-two victory in the sixth race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2019, ahead of Larry ten Voorde, with the two MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing cars of Tio Ellinas and Dylan Pereira finishing just behind the Dutchman in P4 and P5.
Reigning Supercup Champion Michael Ammermüller, displaying a very special birthday livery for his team boss on his car number one, took the lead from pole sitter Julien Andlauer towards the end of lap six, when the French Porsche Junior made a little mistake: “He got a bit wide and I was close enough to make use of the situation. We touched very slightly, but it was not dangerous, all within the proper parameters between teammates”, the 33-year old Bavarian stated. “Later on I could extend my lead a little bit, maybe there was a bit more left in my tyres. Of course I am very happy about my second win of the season. I guess the special livery for Walter brought me some luck. Now I´ve closed the gap to Julien in the Championship, so it looks like it will be a very close fight until the end.” Andlauer was a bit angry with himself after the race: “It was my mistake and I had to pay for it”, said the French Porsche Junior. “Of course under these circumstances I cannot be really happy with P2, but at least it was again a great team result on Walter´s special day.”
Tio Ellinas and Dylan Pereira seemed to be faster than ten Voorde especially in the final stages of the race, fighting for the final step of the podium: “But if the guy ahead of you does not make a mistake, it is ever so difficult to overtake on this track and there was no chance of starting a real attack without taking too much of a risk”, the two MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing drivers agreed.
Al Faisal Al Zubair lost a bit of ground from his sixth place on the grid at the start and finally finished in P10. His Lechner Racing Middle East teammate Saul Hack nearly fell victim to another car spinning through the field on the first lap: “It was really close, but I just managed to avoid him, but I lost a few places. Later I let Pedersen pass without too much of a fight, as I knew he was so much faster, and rather tried to follow him a bit. P19 is not too bad, and it was very important for me to have a clean weekend here, which I did.” Guest starter JB Simmenauer had a good race, climbing from P20 on the grid after a not so good qualifying to P13: “Every chance the guys ahead of me gave me to overtake, I took – and it worked out well”, the 19-year-old from France was content.
“Of course it is a fantastic feeling to be able to celebrate so many things in one day”, Walter Lechner was joyful after the race. “Yesterday night Porsche, my team and my family provided me with a great birthday party – and now today we have such a great result again. The fight between Julien and Michael was hard, but always very fair, two really great professionals. Michael did a very clever move in the right moment, when Julien had made a little mistake. This also shows how much his long experience is worth.”
