Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup
One-two for BWT Lechner Racing at Home Race – Julien Andlauer on Top
BWT Lechner Racing driver Julien Andlauer claimed a dominant victory at the third race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2019 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg/Austria, 4.9 seconds ahead of his teammate Michael Ammermüller, with Larry ten Voorde in third place. Five Lechner cars in the end finished within the Top 11.
Andlauer, starting from pole position, had to fight hard in the first lap to defend his lead against ten Voorde, but as the race unfolded, managed to extend his lead bit by bit, never getting in danger again to lose the top spot. “But nevertheless it was not an easy race”, the ever so happy French Porsche Junior stated afterwords. “Especially with the heat, it is quite difficult to always stay focussed and not make the slightest mistake. I am glad we did it – it´s a great day for the BWT Lechner team to celebrate a one-two here in front of our home crowd.”
Michael Ammermüller with his third podium finish of the year defended his championship lead, now ahead five points ahead of Andlauer who overtook so far second-placed Güven, making it a one-two in the championship for BWT Lechner Racing for the first time in 2019: “Yesterday in qualifying we gambled a bit with the tyres, so I had to start from P4. But I was the only one to start on fresh rubber, so I could make up some ground in the beginning.” The Bavarian was third after lap one, and seemed to be already able to overtake ten Voorde on lap 2, but had to back off due to a yellow flag for the stopped Güven car. “If I had managed to get by there, I might have had a chance, but then it took too much time to get back in the position to chase after Julien. He already was more than two seconds ahead, and even as I was able to set fastest lap of the race, he always had an answer, so I had to settle in P2 in the end.”
Dylan Pereira, who had started from P3, lost some places in the first lap after a hard fight with Ammermüller sent him off track in turn three, but he later delivered the fight of the race against Florian Latorre. At one moment, he had already squeezed past the Frenchman for P6, but blocking a wheel under braking dropped him back to P7 again soon after. His MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing teammate Tio Ellinas had to make up for an anything but perfect qualifying, with a good race he was able to improve from P14 on the grind to P10: “I just wish I would have a good qualifying once – then for sure I could do much more, as I believe I have the speed to compete in the front of the field”, the 26-year-old from Cyprus was not completely happy afterwards.
Team Lechner Racing Middle East´s Al Faisal Al Zubair from Oman confirmed his good performance over the whole weekend with P11 in the race, being the only driver not having tested at all at the Red Bull Ring due to his recent exams. His South African teammate Saul Hack finished in P18, JB Simmenauer, a guest starter with the team this weekend, had already made up a few positions to P14, but then got involved in two little incidents and dropped back to P19.
Team principal Walter Lechner was of course very content with the result: “As I said already yesterday, winning your home race is always very special. I told Julien that if he was able to have a good start and keep the lead from the beginning, he would probably be able to drive away with the race – and that´s what he did. Michael was a bit unlucky with the yellow flag, but to have two of our pink cars ahead here is a fantastic feeling.”
