Julien Andlauer takes Porsche Supercup Lead at Silverstone
BWT Lechner Racing drivers Julien Andlauer and Michael Ammermüller managed to do more than damage control in the fourth race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2019 at Silverstone after a not perfect Saturday. Andlauer made it to P2 just half a second behind Ayhancan Güven after a very impressive race and took the Championship lead from his teammate Michael Ammermüller, who finished in P6, also having made up a few places in the race, with an advantage of three points now.
Andlauer, starting from P6 after having his fastest lap in qualifying deleted due to track limits, already made up two places and on lap 4 also got past fellow Porsche Junior Jaxon Evans, securing a spot on the podium. Setting a few fastest laps of the race, he also put a lot of pressure on Florian Latorre in front of him, finally getting by his fellow countryman on lap 9. When it started to rain during the last two laps, he even came very close to Güven, “but I guess I would have needed one more lap”, the 20-year-old was smiling after the race. “Nevertheless I am really happy with the outcome today, especially judging my own race performance and also the situation in the championship.”
Two times Porsche Supercup champion Michael Ammermüller also made up some ground from P9, especially with a nice move against Mikkel Pedersen on lap 5, then managed to avoid spinning Joey Mawson ahead of him, which brought him up to P 6. “In the last laps, I got very close to the guys ahead of me, but there was no chance to start a real attack without taking too much risk. My aim in this race was to score as may points as possible, so I think the result is not too bad, considering from where I came from.”
Team Lechner Racing Middle East´s Al Faisal Al Zubair , who had been very happy about his 7th position on the grid, was a victim of the Mawson spin, as he had to go wide to avoid a crash and so lost a few positions, which dropped him back into a midfield fight with three other Lechner cars. “But at least I came out of this on top, even if today for sure a little bis more was possible”, the Youngster from Oman stated. He finished in P11, just ahead of Dylan Pereira from Team MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing in P12. Pereira´s teammate Tio Ellinas was dropped back to P16 just behind guest starter JB Simmenauer in P15 by a three-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track.
Neither Ellinas nor team principal Walter Lechner were too amused about it: “Everybody went all over the place there and only Tio got a penalty, a bit strange...” Saul Hack from Team Lechner Racing Middle East finished in P21: “He is still in his learning year, getting to know the tracks and to adapt to this new level of racing for him,”Lechner stated.
In general, the Austrian was very happy with the final outcome of the weekend: “We fought back after a not so perfect start. Julien showed today what a great racer he is, and proved that he will be a very serious championship contender. Michael did what he had to do from his grid position, but I also would like to mention Al Faisal, who really drove very well over the whole weekend and only lost an even better result due to some bad luck in one moment.”
