Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup

Hot Free Practice for Lechner Racing Teams at Hockenheim – Ammermüller Fastest

The incredible heat of nearly 40 degrees did not prevent the Lechner Racing squads from putting in a very strong  performance in a slightly chaotic free practise for the fifth race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2019 at Hockenheim, with the final results coming out only more than three  hours after the end of the session.

Then it was secure that BWT Lechner Racing driver Michael Ammermüller was fastest, as he got two lap back which had been deleted before due to track limit violations. “I am quite sure I did nothing wrong especially on my fastest lap, which was good enough for P1 by just one thousands of a second,”  the two times Supercup Champion had stated already immediately after practice, “so now I am of course happy to get my reward.” It was not an easy task for the drivers in general: “I guess in the car it came close to 70 degrees”, said Ammermüller, “but at least it was only today that we had to deal with it. On the other hand if it will be really raining in qualifying, it might not be so pleasant either, especially as everything then becomes a really lottery... We had this last year here, with the track drying and the most important thing to be the last car to cross the line...”

His BWT Lechner Racing teammate Julien Andlauer, slightly hampered by traffic and also struggling with a bit of oversteer on his fresh set of tyres finished in P6. “One or two tenth I could have gone faster”, the French Porsche Junior was convinced.

Dylan Pereira from MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing ended up in P4, his teamate Tio Ellinas finishing in P9. “I am quite happy with the car and my performance today”, the 21-year-old from Luxembourg stated. “I hope the weekend continues like this.”

Lechner Racing Middle East regulars Al Faisal Al Zubair and Saul Hack finished in P13 and P26 on track, but for the  South African it was just a bad day in the office: First he had ended up in the gravel bed, hitting his  fellow countryman Ewan  Taylor, who had gone off just before. As a result, the session to be red flagged for a bit more than 15 minutes. Then in the end all his times were deleted, as he had missed a call to the weightbridge.

But the team this weekend also runs youngster Leon Köhler, who is usually racing in the German Porsche Carrera Cup, as a guest driver. For 19-year-old Köhler it is a real home race, as he lives only about 45 minutes away from Hockenheim, near Frankfurt: “Of course it will help that I know the track very well, I have driven here quite often. Actually, last year during the F1 weekend I raced here still in Formula 4 and even made it to the front row of the grid. I am really happy to be given the chance of a guest start here by Lechner Racing. And in general I think for me and my future it was the completely right decision to change to Porsche Cup racing this year. P15 today is quite okay, but it was really exhausting in the heat. So let´s see if I can do even a bit better tomorrow.”

“The important thing is that we seem to have the speed again to be competitive”, team principal Walter Lechner was adamant. “But with the weather maybe playing havocs in qualifying, we will have to see anyway what this performance will be worth in the end. Especially in changing conditions, always everything is possible.”
