Lechner Racing Porsche Supercup

Emotional Start of 2021 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for Lechner Racing at Monaco

After a one year break Formula 1 is back to its annual highlight at Monte Carlo – and with it the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. To start the 2021 season at this classical event is a very special feeling for everybody, but especially for Lechner Racing CEO and Team Principal Robert Lechner: “To come back to the Supercup, which for so many years was the main playing field for our father Walter, whom we lost last December, will be very emotional for me and for the whole team. Of course the memories go back to our last two wins here with Michael Ammermüller in 2018 and 2019, on the celebrations we had here with Walter. But I am sure he will be very close to us this weekend and we will do everything possible to make him proud.”

Lechner Racing will enter the new season with two teams and five drivers: BWT Lechner Racing, winner of the Supercup team championship in the past three years, can count on a very strong driver line-up:  Car number 1 will be driven by long time Lecher pilot JB Simmenauer, car number 2 by Ayhancan Güven. The 23-year-old from Turkey won the French Porsche Carrera Cup twice in 2018 and 2019 and was also Rookie Champion in the Supercup in 2019 an joined the team for 2021. Car number 3 is in the experienced hands of last year´s Supercup runner-up Dylan Pereira, also a very well-known face for years now at Lechner Racing. “To be absolutely fair and not let come up any suspicions of favouring someone, we attributed the starting numbers to the drivers in the order of them signing their contracts with us”, Lechner says with a smile, “so nobody can complain.”

Team  Lechner Racing Middle East is also represented by two champions: Tio Elinas from Cyprus, who returns to the team after already having driven for Lechner Racing in 2019, is the winner of the British Porsche Carrera Cup in 2018. He will be joined by French Pro-Am driver Nicolas Misslin, who won the French Porsche Carrera Cup Pro-Am Championship with Lechner Racing  in 2020. Lechner Racing Team Manager Michael Schöch is convinced that this duo will bring home some very good results for the team this year: “I think Tio can be a surprise to a lot of people. For sure he will profit from the great experience of the team and the skills of his teammates and put them to the best of use. Nicolas has shown quite often that he is very strong and he will be one of the serious title contenders in the Pro-AM category.”

An important factor in the 2021 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season will be the new car, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “Everybody has still to adapt, to learn the last details about the new car”, says Schöch, “but we worked very hard to be well prepared for the start of the season. Nevertheless it is possible that there will be some changes in the usual pecking order mainly at the beginning –  especially with the addition of new teams from Germany, Great Britain and France.”

“We have to see how things develop”, adds Robert Lechner, “nothing can be taken for granted, even if the team was very, very successful during the last years. But what I am already very proud of is that we all stayed together. Everybody, from truck drivers to all the mechanics and engineers, who was with us in the past is still here, as an important asset to the team. And everybody is incredibly motivated as ever, to continue what Walter has created over so many years: a successful racing team with also a great atmosphere and strong human relationships within. Which is at least as valuable as race wins and championship trophies. To protect this heritage is our desire and obligation.”
