Eight Cars for Lechner Racing at Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Home Race in Austria
Running a total of eight cars during their Austrian home race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Red Bull Ring presents a huge challenge to the three Lechner Racing teams this weekend. A lot of focus will be concentrated on local hero Thomas Preining. The 19-year-old from BWT Lechner Racing boosted his self confidence winning the two races of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany at the Red Bull Ring three weeks ago. “Of course it would be great to be able to repeat this result now in the Porsche Supercup, but you can ́t take it as a given of course, as the opposition here is even stronger”, the young Austrian does not want to create too high expectations, “but of course I am aiming at least for a podium finish again.”
“As Thomas did not have a very good start into the season in the first two races, his chances for the championship are rather small already now. But this also can turn out to become an advantage for him now”, emphasizes team principal Walter Lechner. “He is now absolutely free to attack, does not have to play any tactical games – and can really go for it, taking risks the championship contenders maybe have to avoid.” This situation already comes into play for championship leader and title defender Michael Ammermüller. The Bavarian, also representing the pink colours of BWT Lechner Racing, as well as his close rivals Nick Yelloly, Jaap van Lagen and Dylan Pereira, will already have to start racing with one eye on the fight for the title, making sure not to throw away any valuable points.
MOMO Megatron Lechner Racing, well prepared after the two test days at Silverstone, will feature Philip Hamprecht again as a guest driver at Spielberg, for the second time after Barcelona, besides regular drivers Dylan Pereira and Josh Webster. The 21-year old German recently won a race of the Asian Porsche Carrera Cup and is also currently leading this championship. “There are longtime family connections between the Lechners and the Hamprechts”, Walter Lechner says with a very big smile. “My son Robert many years ago won races in the German Formula 3 in the team of Philip ́s father Marian...”
Lechner Racing Middle East will enter three cars for the next races from Spielberg onwards: Al Faisal Al Zubair, reigning champion of the Porsche GT3 Challenge Middle East, who recently had to get medical treatment at Leoben/Austria due to an ear problem, and Roar Lindland, the current leader of the ProAM-Category after two wins in a row, will be joined by still 17-year old Khalid Al Wahaibi, the youngest competitor in the Porsche Supercup. The very talented Omani youngster already raced at the Red Bull Ring in the German Carrera Cup and now uses the summer school break to gain more and more experience on his way to a professional racing career.
For Walter Lechner Spielberg is a very important event of the 2018 season. “Not only because it is our home race, which is very important of course as well. But for me, this year ́s championship only really begins now. We have four races now within five weeks, this might well turn out to be the decisive part of the whole season.”
