Difficult Start for BWT Lechner Racing into German Porsche Carrera Cup 2019

It was not the start in to the new German Porsche Carrera Cup season 2019 Lechner Racing was hoping for: After an already very difficult qualifying under changing track conditions and a Red Flag with only five minutes to go, the race also did not bring much luck to the Austrian squad.

BWT Lechner Racing´s Michael Ammermüller, who had started from P6 despite some engine troubles during qualifying, seemed to be on his way to closing in to the leaders when he was first slightly hit by Henric Skoog and then spun around by Igor Walilko and sent back to P16. He  recovered to P12 at the chequered flag in a race that was marked by quite a few incidents and Safety-Car periods. “It was one of these days”, the 33-year-old Bavarian shrugged, “I don´t think I did anything wrong, but it was just not meant to  be.”

One of the Safety Cars was caused by a three car crash at the hairpin which forced Lechner Racing´s Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer out of the race with a seriously damaged car and a slight foot injury.  The Second BWT Lechner Racing driver Julien Andlauer was also involved in this incident: “I have the feeling that my steering was a bit damaged after that, so the car was quite difficult to drive afterwards”, said the Frenchman, who had to be content with 13th place in the end. To add insult to injury, Dylan Pereira from Lechner Racing, who had already made it to P10 from P18 on the grid, was  handed a drive-through penalty for a false start, which dropped him back to P20.

Team principal Walter Lechner was of course not very happy with Saturday´s result, “but after so many years in motor racing you know that these things can happen. The rather bad qualifying was already the key, once you are stuck in the midfield, things get rather difficult, especially as everybody obviously wants to give our pink cars an especially hard fight. In general, we have to try to do some damage control tomorrow, and then turn everything around in one week´s time at the first Porsche Supercup weekend at Barcelona.

The second race of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany 2019 at Hockenheim will start on Sunday 5th  of May at 11.15 am.
