Michael Ammermüller Porsche Supercup Champion 2017
Michael Ammermüller is the new Porsche Supercup Champion 2017. A second place behind Australian Matt Campbell was enough for the 31-year-old Bavarian to finally score the title with an advantage of seven points ahead of Dennis Olsen with Lechner Racing. "I am absolutely over the moon," said Ammermüller while walking to the podium. "I was fighting for this Championship so hard, to have won it now is a so fantastic feeling. I think at least in the second half of the race I was faster than Matt ahead of me. I tried a few attacks, but in the end I decided to play it safe and not to take too much risk in this situation. The Championship is just so much more important than one more race win."
Olsen, the only remaining title contender, finished third, never really being able to challenge the two front runners. The Norwegian was the only top driver who had already used up his fourth set of new tyres in yesterday´s race and starting on used tires now had to pay the price for it. For a long time Dan Cammish seemed to be set for P4, but then the Brit damaged his rear wing in a little off and finally had to retire.
Young Austrian Thomas Preining again did a great job, when he overtook Zaid Ashkanani in the very last lap for P5. "In the beginning I lost a few places, mainly because of being pushed around by some other drivers", said the 19-year-old. "But then I was able to make my way back through the field and I am really happy that I managed to claim this fifth place in the end." Ryan Cullen in P9 and Al Faisal Al Zubair in P12 completed another team result for Lechner Racing in the last race of the season with five cars in the Top Twelve.
Team principal Walter Lechner was praising his new champion: "Congratulations to Michael, who did a fantastic job over the whole year and really deserves the title. But I also have to mention Dennis, who gave him a hard challenge until the end and finally accepted his defeat in a sportive manner."
